Walking on Symi

If you are looking for a good hiking map on Symi, the Skai map at 1:20,000 is as good as it gets. Well marked and researched with accurate contour lines I would recommend carrying this map where ever you go. You can buy this online, and in various shops around Symi. The edition I have is 2009 and although Skai have suggested a new updated edition in 2012 I have yet to see it.

The only downside is that the footpaths are not all marked. To date I have added a further 50% more on this map and one path I know of that is marked can not be walked. On the ground the paths are not always well marked; small stone piles and red and blue dots, often faded, are all you have to go by. The footpaths are not always well trodden and it is easy to be misled by a goat track.

There are numerous walking guides about Symi, some available on line such as Lance Chilton's excellent guide and make a useful contribution to hiking on Symi. Safe walking to you all!!
