Symi Heron

November 7, 2014

A rare bird for Symi taken last Tuesday by Neil Gosling along the coast to Nimborio. This photo was first published at Symidream. I've seen one here before last year. This is a grey heron and judging by its dark plumage probably a fledgling from this year. The youngsters have a habit of travelling large distances to look for new feeding grounds which relieves the pressure on local reserves close to heronries. Unlike herons from the UK and nearby countries the herons from the north and east of Europe will migrate south for the winter. There are heronries along the west coast of Turkey, Lesbos, Samos and northern Greece so this bird could have come from any of these places as well as much further north.
