Summer Visitors

April 2, 2014

We walked out of the village for about an hour and half to a place called Lappatoniou castle along a windy and dusty track. A warm spring day with a cool breeze made the going easy but the rocky path meant it was always heads down. Only the call of bird song alerted us to any life nearby. A group of larks were working the hillside below us and a pair of wheatears  were flitting among the rocks. Both species I'm a little unsure about so I'm waiting for confirmation from a friend, but probably Northern wheatears and Eurasion skylarks; if so northern wheatears a first here on Symi. Elsewhere Cretschmar's buntings were chirping about the rocks and a lone Raven was hunting high in the sky.
