A Flora and Fauna of Symi

A personal guide to the wildlife of Symi and beyond

Summer's Here for the Day

The skies are full of hirundines this morning; common swifts, swallows, house martins, crag martins but no alpine swifts as yet. Indeed this is the first time I've seen common swifts over Symi in large numbers; the really big colony of these birds is to be seen at the cathedral on Rhodes town (opposite the post office).

The familiar sound of chattering swallows here seen outside the house as they dive in and out of a derelict building in Horio. Plenty of places to nest on Symi.

The common swifts don't nest here as far as I know although the alpine swifts nest in large numbers on some of the smaller islands that surround Symi. They will arrive later.
