Rodos; day 3 afternoon

St Nikolas Foundoukli

The return down from Profitis Ilias was slightly less traumatic being in the lee of the winds and in the shelter of the trees.

This is St Nikolas Foundoukli and the plaque tells me it was built in the 14th century.

The Murals inside are stunning and this place is well worth a stop.

Nearby is one of the biggest olive trees I have seen in Greece and could possibly be contemporary with the church.

There are others scattered around the church in what was once an ancient olive grove but is now a picnic/childrens play area!

The bole of this plane tree is huge and I suspect is contemporary with the church. I imagine that once upon a time in its prime it would have provided shade for pilgrims walking to Profitis Ilias on what would have been just a dirt track.

The very last stop was at this naturally spring fed pond built by the Italians in the 1920's at Eleoussa.
