Panagia Mirtidiotissa

The little chapel of Panagia Mirtidiotissa sits high above Ksissos overlooking the surrounding countryside and in the private grounds of  a local family. The gate is always locked but if you ring the bell a member of the family will open the gate and allow to look around for a while.

The views from here are stunning, overlooking the monastery of Michail Roukouniotis and the Datca peninsular beyond in Turkey.

The kermes oak tree that provides shade for the chapel and the lower yard consists of five or so individual trunks that perhaps have sprouted from a much older tree that has long since gone. The limbs are held together by this massive chain. I wouldn't be surprised if the tree is contemporary with the church, but there's no way of telling.
