Migration and Bee Eaters

September 8, 2014

As I write this today (11th  Sept) a small group of 20+ bee eaters are flying over the village. I was lucky to get this pic as they were flying high and fast. Earlier in the week while out walking near the wine presses with a small group another flock of bee eaters circled over head. This time they were accompanied by various hirundines making up to maybe 50 birds or so. Also noticeable amongst the calabrian pines were a number of chiffchaffs, scurrying around the branches looking for insects. Some of these birds will spend the winter here on Symi. A possible woodchat shrike was also seen along our path on a low branch flitting to the ground and back again. Difficult to be sure as it moved on quickly but there have been sightings on Symi before.
