Mesochorio; part one.

Mesochorio is set under some impressive limestone cliffs just a few miles off the main road on the west side of Karpathos.

This is a gem of a village and although many of the buildings have been modernised the real star for me is the green valley and the productive terraces either side of the main church.

The vaults under the church provide the answer as to why the terraces are so lush green.

This was taken in November before the rains have started and the springs are still flowing.

You can hear the fall of water wherever you are as it works its way around the terraces, nourishing the orchards and vegetable gardens.

The bottom of the village sits on more impressive cliffs, safe from any marauding pirates.

The views beyond are wonderful.

One little mystery, though, fixed to the outside of  one of the churches on the village square is this bell, dedicated to the Titanic 1912.

Anybody?
