A Flora and Fauna of Symi

A personal guide to the wildlife of Symi and beyond

Always a good place to start is the Kremasti river just at the end of the runway at the Diagoras airport on Rhodes.

Here seen full of water I only had a few hours to explore but it seemed a butterfly day after a day of torrential rain the day before.

A small copper....

Painted lady, more of those much later........

A common swallowtail and another half dozen species that I didn't manage to capture on film.

Here the river ends, or at least flows under the pebbles on the beach and into the sea.

Nearby a booted eagle flew overhead and there are cetti's warblers still singing. Several resident coots were swimming about along with a kingfisher and lots of other small birds flying in and out of the reeds.

Better in spring I imagine! Still I had a plane to catch.
