Ierapetra is the southern most city in Crete and Europe and has many influences from North Africa, Byzantine, and elsewhere. The climate is sub tropical and has more sunny days a year than anywhere else in Europe. Despite its dry climate it is a huge vegetable growing area, mostly under greenhouses and the shops are filled with fresh vegetables all the year round. November is the planting season and coincides with the first rains.

The old harbour is guarded by a Venetian fort built in the 14c and contains the city's small fishing fleet.

The harbour is also a good fishing ground for a resident pair of kingfishers. Beyond are several miles of shoreline with many rock pools where kingfishers, little egrets and other birds can find plenty of fish
