Forests on Rhodes

The main flowering time for orchids is slowly coming to an end and in this case I was looking in pine woodlands on the slopes of a very large hill on Rhodes. My guide book was written some 13 years ago when most of the roads were dirt tracks and also many of the orchids nomenclature has changed as a greater understanding of the plants described has progressed. References to hotspots are difficult to find; one reference relies on a series of "milestones" in kilometres that the Italians placed by the side of the road from the Italian governor's house to Rhodes town, which starts at 50. However some are missing.......

Within a yard there were four orchids; Orchis anatolica, Orchis italica, Neotinea maculata and Ophrys scopolax subsp heldreichii.

More commonly found in lighter areas, by the side of the road for example, is Ophrys lutea.
